A number of universities in NSW have already announced mass job cuts. These universities are citing the Federal Government’s intention to cap the number of international student enrolments as a reason to cut costs.

This has resulted in excess of 1300 professional staff jobs being cut across the sector. This will drastically impact tertiary education at a time where upwards of $800 million spent on engaging consultants and executive travel in 2023 could have been saved to avoid the cuts we are now facing.

As a result, I am appealing to you, as your constituent, to support professional staff such as myself. I ask that you make representations on my behalf, and on behalf of professional staff as a whole, to:

- Reinforce state legislative provisions for establishing universities to serve the education needs of their respective regions/cities, and

- Reinforce the need to retain staff and for universities to engage in responsible expenditure of public funds, imploring universities to prioritise non-salaried cost savings prior to targeting professional staff cuts.

Professional staff are skilled and passionate. They are the staff who hold the university together. The provision of tertiary education to both local and international students is damaged when there are cuts to professional staff.

Many of these students undertake their education expecting a vibrant and lively campus experience, with professional staff integral to this experience. Professional staff are who students interact with from the day they begin their studies. This contact continues as they navigate their journeys through their time at the university.

The reality is that without professional staff, there is no student experience.

I appeal to you as a member of the government to use your voice to call out these cuts and support the university sector to return to their true purpose with improved governance.
