The plan to cut 950 jobs across Transport for NSW (TfNSW) before Christmas will have a disastrous affect on the provision of transport services across this state. This announcement is especially galling, as Transport Senior Service Executives (TSSEs) appear to be immune from scrutiny, able to continue on their inflated pay packets (from $230,000 up to $648,220 per year) whilst workers on more modest wages are targeted.

We call on the State Government to explain why frontline workers' jobs are on the line while more than 1000 Senior Executives are seemingly untouchable.

I am writing to you as your constituent to highlight the recent announcement by Transport Secretary Josh Murray to cut 950 jobs at TfNSW, at the same time as protecting Senior Executives from facing scrutiny or responsibility. These cuts are supposedly in order to find “savings” of $279 million.

I appeal for your support to save these critical jobs.

The plan to cut 950 jobs across TfNSW before Christmas will have a disastrous affect on the provision of transport services across this state. This announcement is especially galling, as Transport Senior Service Executives (TSSEs) appear to be immune from scrutiny, able to continue on their inflated pay packets (from $230,000 up to $648,220 per year) whilst workers on more modest wages are targeted.

The fact is there are currently approximately 1100 Senior Executives in Transport, which is more than the Health, Education and Justice Departments combined. With approximately 4000 Senior Executives across the entire Government Sector, Transport has 1 in 4 highly paid Senior Executives employed in NSW on its books, despite having just 7.5 per cent of the total Government Sector workforce.

If the NSW Government wants to find efficiencies and savings, it needs to explain why it believes TfNSW needs 25 per cent of the total number of Senior Executives across the Government Sector. The NSW Government needs to explain why it is cutting workers’ positions before adequately reviewing and reducing the size of Senior Executives across Transport.

Whilst TfNSW repeatedly points out it has have cut 200 Senior Executives over the past two years, the fact is there are still substantially more Senior Executives employed in Transport than any other Department. It is also a fact that TfNSW has decided to achieve the above small reduction in Senior Executives through a process of “natural attrition” over years, whilst it treats its remaining staff with disdain by forcibly cutting 950 workers over the next four months.

Cutting these jobs will have a disastrous effect on services to the community.

The 950 job cuts will inevitably lead to increased workloads and pressure on remaining staff, whilst allowing the free ride for the bloated Transport Senior Executive Service to continue.

Unfortunately, it seems that because of extremely generous “compensation” clauses in contracts for Senior Executives, the NSW Government is hesitant to find savings from this cohort of highly paid individuals. Instead it is much easier to cut jobs from those with less generous conditions.

However, these generous compensation clauses could be changed tomorrow. The NSW Government needs to change legislation, so it does not have to pay Senior Executives these huge golden handshakes of $400,000 and be held accountable for the delivery of Transport Services.

I call on the NSW Government to stop the protection racket for Senior Executives and have a look at the numbers again. If there is a need to make $279 million in “internal labour savings”, the NSW

Government should continue reducing the size of Senior Executives in Transport in order to avoid job cuts for Award staff. This will avoid the disastrous affect these proposed cuts will have on Transport Services for communities across the state.

I also request as a constituent, your views on the above announcement, and whether you stand with Transport Workers across the state in demanding a halt to the job cuts until TfNSW adequately review the size of their Senior Executives.
